The Culture Collection of Sea Microorganisms (CoSMi) at the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) started in the early 90ties due to the necessity to cultivate microzooplanktonic organisms for different projects. During the following decade toxic dinoflagellates became an important part of the collection.
The Collection contains in particular marine dinoflagellates, diatoms, nanoplanktonic flagellates, ciliates, other protozoa and procaryots. The majority of the species have been isolated from the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic).
Special weight is posed on potentially toxic phytoplanktonic species, but the collection includes also species for the use in aquaculture and for didactic purposes.
The divulgation of knowledge about the basics of the planktonic foodweb in collaboration with schools and science-centers is another of the basic tasks of the CosMi.
The curator of the collection is Dr. Alfred Beran (OGS-OCE, group MAB)
